Upcoming PS4 Games 2021: All the biggest games for this year and beyond

The next generation of consoles is here, meaning that the majority of Sony’s attention will now be placed firmly on the PlayStation 5. Despite the PS4 now being old news, there are still millions of players who call the platform home, and their primary console when it comes to playing games. 

Because of this, there remains a selection of exciting games in the works for PS4, and that includes some of the year’s biggest and best first-party exclusives. Trusted Reviews has compiled all of the most exciting games coming to PS4 in 2021 and beyond.

Biomutant

Developer: Experiment 101

Release Date: May 25, 2021 

This open-world action-adventure seems to be combining the best elements of a world in the style of Monster Hunter and… Devil May Cry’s pistol and sword combat of all things.

In Biomutant, you take control of a raccoon-like creature that is trying to find a cure for its world, in which a mysterious poison turns all inhabitants into monsters. Body augmentations and a large number of weapons promise variety in combat, while the world with jungles, deserts, and snowy mountains looks too pretty not to explore.

Dying Light 2

Developer: Techland

Release Date: TBA 

The original Dying Light was a wonderful surprise, taking the underwhelming foundations established by Dead Island and transforming them into one of the generation’s best open-world adventures. Taking place across a city crawling with undead, you avoided them by running, jumping and climbing like a true athlete, using the environment to your advantage in order to survive.

It felt amazing play, only made better by additional expansions in the months that followed. The sequel aims to expand upon this with a larger, more ambitious setting which places player decisions at the forefront, ensuring each step, no matter how big or small, has consequences. Dying Light 2 has looked fantastic each and every time we’ve seen it here at Trusted Reviews, meaning it could easily be one of 2021’s biggest hits.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Developer: Traveller’s Tales

We’ve always had a soft spot in our hearts for LEGO games, and that love goes even further with Star Wars. Combine the two and you’ve got a match made in heaven, one which Traveller’s Tales has milked to death with countless games in recent years. So, you’d assume the well has long run dry. Well, it turns out we were wrong, since The Skywalker Saga aims to completely reinvent LEGO games – bringing them into the modern generation with new visuals, mechanics and more.

The Skywalker Saga will feature all eight films – including the upcoming Rise of the Skywalker. Players can experience the events of each epic story while exploring a sprawling open world filled with collectibles. These aren’t simple ports of existing games, either. Each film has been recreated in a new gameplay engine complete with new mechanics and characters to play as. From the hands-off demo we saw at E3 2019, it’s really something special.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

Developer: Hardsuit Labs

Release Date: TBA 2022

The original Bloodlines is a cult classic amongst RPG fans, with many having given up hope that a sequel would ever materialise. Well – this unexpected wish has come true, and the upcoming new entry is also on its way to next-gen consoles. Taking place in a rain-drenched Seattle, players will take on the role of a unique character who must solve a dark, unfolding mystery spread across the metropolis.

Players can once again expect a wide range of gameplay approaches, different factions to communicate with and a world that is constantly shaped and changed by the decisions you make. Here’s hoping this new installment reaches a much wider audience, given how beloved the original game was and still is amongst its fanbase.

Horizon 2: Forbidden West

Horizon Zero Dawn made Aloy into an instantly iconic heroine, cementing her as a PlayStation mascot for generations to come. In a move that has surprised absolutely nobody, a sequel is in the works for the critically acclaimed open-world adventure.

Forbidden West will take players to a post-apocalyptic vision of San Francisco as they seek to uncover more about Aloy’s past and the strange menace that threatens humanity. While the original game was undoubtedly stunning, it was held back by its fairly predictable approach to its world and gameplay. With a few tweaks, this new game could be something very special indeed. 

Far Cry 6

Developer: Ubisoft

Release Date: TBA 2021 

Ubisoft is back with another entry in its first-person shooter franchise, and hopefully this new adventure to the fictional Caribbean island of Yara will bring with it some welcome changes to the stale formula. Far Cry 5 was enjoyable, but relied on a formula that hasn’t changed much in the past decade. 

With this new outing, Ubisoft has an opportunity to break new ground. Starring Giancarlo Esposito of The Mandalorian and Breaking Bad fame as its main villain, we can once again expect to contend with a larger than life threat simply begging to be taken down. Expect plenty of silly weapons, gorgeous locales and more when Far Cry 6 lands later in the year. 

Resident Evil Village

Developer: Capcom

Release Date: May 7, 2021 

Capcom’s new vision for the Resident Evil franchise will venture further with the arrival of Resident Evil Village. Taking place after the events of Resi 7, players will once again step into the shoes of Ethan Winters as he finds himself venturing to a remote village in search of very important answers. Unfortunately, it’s filled with all sorts of nasty business. 

Iconic characters such as Chris Redfield will return, and it seems he’s up to something strange if the trailer is any indication. Monsters such as classic zombies, werewolves and dangerous members of the occult are just some of the threats Ethan must contend with in this pulse-pounding survival horror outing. A lot of information has leaked online, so if you want to go in blind be very careful. 

Scarlet Nexus

Developer: Bandai Namco

Release Date: TBA 2021 

If you’re a fan of edgy anime boys and over-the-top action, Scarlet Nexus will almost definitely be up your street. Created by some of the minds behind Code Vein and the Tales franchise, this is an action role-playing game set in a dark future where humanity has formed societal factions based on the substance of human brains. 

The main draw here appears to be the psychadelic anime visuals and a fast, frenetic combat system where you can use a variety of distinct weapons and abilities. While it likely won’t break any new ground, Scarlet Nexus is shaping up to be a fun adventure that genre fans will adore. 

Back 4 Blood

Developer: Turtle Rock Studios

Release Date: June 22, 2020

From the creators of Left 4 Dead and Evolve comes a new twist on four-player post apocalyptic survival. Fans of Valve’s iconic shooter franchise will find a lot to love in Back 4 Blood, which is essentially a spiritual successor to everything it managed to achieve.

You and three friends can team up to take on endless armies of undead hordes while making your way through a series of increasingly challenging levels. Zombies have several different enemy types, but you’re also in possession of a selection of deadly weapons in your arsenal.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…

Developer: Square Enix

Release Date: April 23, 2021

NieR Replicant™ ver.1.22474487139… (yes, that’s the real title) is a remaster of the cult classic which originally launched for PS3 and Xbox 360. Now, following the global success of its sequel, Square Enix is enhancing the original experience with new visuals, voice acting and combat mechanics for an entirely new audience.

The ambitious RPG tells a melancholic story amidst a post-apocalyptic world, and we can’t wait for it to tug at our heartstrings all over again. While the original was hindered by a lacking budget and some obtuse sections, this remaster seeks to remedy all of these problems while also adding so much more substance to the entire package.
